Flood Proofing Ocean Wonders: Sharks!

Adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, Ocean wonders: Sharks! (OWS) required significant flood proofing further reinforced by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Construction of OWS was delayed for more than a year while design revisions were made to flood-proof the structure against future storm events of similar magnitude. Resiliency was integrated into the building by using admixtures in the concrete for a waterproof mix, full-height pneumatically sealed flood doors at the lower-level service areas, and a backup generator on the roof. As a result of Sandy, additional temporary flood walls were integrated into the design of the plaza façade that can be deployed before a storm event.
