Thomas Murphy Clubhouse Pool Renovation Process
When the Madison Square Boys & Girl’s Club reached out for a redesign of its indoor community pool at the Thomas S. Murphy Clubhouse, we were thrilled. The existing natatorium, original to the 1920’s building needed an update including, new finishes, a reshaped pool floor, updated lighting, new gutter and return systems, de-humidification systems and a new entry lobby for spectators.
Inspired by both the community work of the Club and the importance of swim safety, we aimed showcase the heart of the Club, the kids. Our design includes a monochromatic, glass tile mosaic commencing at the Pool Lobby and extending 90’ along the length of the pool room. The team including the Club, Owner’s Representative LOM Properties, and the architects organized a photoshoot with New York photographer Hatim, using 2 swim teams of about 30 children altogether. The images of the children are incorporated into the mosaic created by ESKW/Architects, truly capturing the motion of the club kids for posterity.
