Forty years of community-led efforts have culminated in a holistic redevelopment of the Greenpoint Hospital Campus into Kingsland Commons. This mixed-use development in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is a multi-phase plan that will provide affordable housing, community facilities, public open space, and a purpose-built men’s shelter.
Marking the first phase of the development, the Barbara Kleiman Men’s Shelter will transform the Campus’s former nurse’s residence into a 60,000 SF, 200-bed shelter for single men. With services provided by Project Renewal, the shelter will provide occupational therapy and employment services to equip the residents with the tools to live independently. The gut renovation features flexible layout dorm rooms, social service offices, programming space, a medical clinic, and a rooftop courtyard.
The existing building is being converted in partnership with the New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to preserve and restore some of the building’s historic interior and exterior elements. All new finishes, mechanical and life safety systems, and landscaping complement the adaptive reuse of the historic building.
