Renovating 7 Entrances and Lobbies for a 1950s NYCHA Development

A simple but elegant design was provided for the renovation of seven entrances and lobbies for a 1950s NYCHA Development. The main challenge was to provide ADA access to an upper elevator lobby 28” above the front entry, while maintaining NYCHA’s strict requirements for visibility and security.

The solution was to locate the required 32-foot ramp within the lobby rather than at the exterior. The new ramp wraps around a freestanding mailbox enclosure and projects the front of the Lobby to create a bay window. This window affords maximum visibility into and out of the Lobby, marks the entrance to the building and acts as an illuminated beacon at night.
