Partnering with BRC on Landing Road to Inwood Shelter & Memorial

We congratulate Bowery Residents’ Committee (BRC) and Gala Honoree, Peggy King Jorde on another successful Gala season!

As construction begins on Inwood Shelter and Memorial, we look back on BRC’s innovative “Homestretch Housing” model, piloted by our joint project, the Apartments at Landing Road and Reaching New Heights Residence. Unlike private, for-profit shelter developments, BRC’s model reinvests surplus income generated by the shelter into the housing portion of the building, thus creating deeply affordable units.

At our newest project, the Inwood Shelter and Memorial, BRC is confronting a different but equally important issue for new developments in a city with layers of history. Having discovered that the project’s site had once been a burial ground for enslaved Africans and a Lenape Ceremonial Site, BRC chose to engage and include, to listen and to learn from the voices of hundreds of stakeholders. We are proud to work with BRC and their Advisory Group for the Inwood Sacred Site (AGISS) to build a place for the community to reflect on the past and find shelter in the present.

Additional details about BRC’s initiatives to honor the site of the Inwood Shelter and Memorial can be found on BRC’s website.
