Into the ESKW/Archives: Co-Op Inspiration

With our own co-op residential project underway, we’re diving into our archives for inspiration. Decades ago, our founders, the Edelmans, led the charge to preserve 9 contiguous brownstones slated for demolition—transforming them into a groundbreaking co-op housing model. By connecting the buildings with corridors, adding fire stairs, an elevator, and extending to the maximum zoning depth, they turned a vision into reality, creating affordable, permanent homes.

Today, as the city explores creative solutions to the housing crisis—from office-to-residential conversions to infill housing—we’re reminded of the innovative spirit that started it all. Let’s keep building on this legacy together!
