Smilow Clubhouse Lower Level

Bronx, New York

Portfolio / Education / Schools

Continuing our work with the Madison Square Boys & Girls Club, the Joel E. Smilow Clubhouse Lower Level renovation project is an opportunity to refresh this active Club. Located in the Bronx and built in the 1970’s, the building exterior is very solid with a highly-secure fortress-like appearance. However, upon entry into the club, the Game Room is bursting with activity.

Like the majority of the club spaces, the Lower Level activity rooms lack daylight. To honor the club’s vibrance, we are renovating the three club rooms and enhancing the connection from the Games Room upstairs. Graphic wall paint on the upper level will visually lead members down a corridor to the stair down to the lower level. Downstairs, members will be met with vibrant flooring and corridor with wide views into the Fine Digital and Arts Room, the Computer Lab, the Education Center, and the Explorer’s Room.

The exposed concrete waffle slab is a design feature and inspiration. Lighting and acoustics have been selected to compliment and work with the exposed structure. The lower level will be a joyful addition to the highly active club.
